Secondary and tertiary education have also seen drastic growth, with global average years of schooling being much higher now than a hundred years ago. despite all these worldwide improvements, some countries have been lagging behind, mainly in sub saharan africa, where there are still countries that have literacy rates below 50% among the youth.

Most research on health systems examines contemporary problems within one, or at most a few, countries. breaking with this tradition, we present a series of case studies in a book written by key policymakers, scholars and experts, looking at health systems and their projected successes to 2030. As a new year and a new decade kick off, who is releasing a list of urgent, global health challenges. this list, developed with input from our experts around the world, reflects a deep concern that leaders are failing to invest enough resources in core health priorities and systems. this puts lives, livelihoods and economies in jeopardy. none of these issues are simple to address, but they are. Health issues are increasingly transnational and in recent years the concept of global health has emerged to address these issues. global health is the study and practice of improving health and health equity for all people worldwide through international and interdisciplinary collaboration .
